When did we start using the word “hike” to mean what it does today? – Life@62!

The word “hiking” has evolved significantly over time. It originated from the English colloquial term “hyke,” meaning to walk vigorously, with its first recorded usage dating back to 1809. However, it became widely used in the early 20th century, particularly during the last decade of John Muir’s life, who disliked the term as it implied rushing rather than enjoying nature. Muir preferred the term “saunter” to describe the act of tramping through the woods, which reflects the modern meaning of hiking today.
