Jude Bellingham scored a dramatic extra-time winner as England overcame an unfortunate Norway to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup.

Bellingham slid home the winning goal in the first half of extra time after a second Norway goal was ruled out by the VAR for an Erling Haaland foul.

Andreas Schjelderup had given Norway the lead, but Bellingham equalised with a brilliant finish — although England were fortunate the goal stood after the ball struck the Skycam during the build-up.

England rode their luck at times and will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Switzerland as they seek to reach the final of the men’s World Cup for the first time since 1966.

Once today is over, there will be just four matches left at the 2026 World Cup: the two semi-finals, the bronze final and the actual final.

England will play in two of those games, as will France and Spain. And it looks like those three teams will be joined by the other top-seeded team, Argentina — they still lead 1-0 against Switzerland after Alexis Mac Allister’s early goal.

Will England think it’s coming home?

Will England think it’s coming home?

It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t easy. But Englandare in the World Cup semi-finals for only the fourth time after needing extra time to beat Norway 2-1 in a steaming hot Miami.

This was perhaps the most disjointed of all of England’s games at this World Cup, after a strong start gave way to a confused second half. Thomas Tuchel withdrew Declan Rice at half-time and it took England far too long to recover their structure. Heggem even had a goal to put Norway 2-1 up overturned by VAR.

But England clung on and ultimately it was Jude Bellingham — who else — who won them the game. He scored late in the first half of normal time to make it 1-1, and then scored the winner two minutes into extra time. Even by his standards it was a performance of remarkable decisiveness. He went off with 10 minutes of extra time left for Dan Burn, who as in Mexico, spent the final minutes heading the ball away.

England will fly to Atlanta for Wednesday’s semi-final with huge questions, about the fitness of Rice, the tiredness of Bellinghamand Kane, and how they managed to lose control for so much of this game.

But their spirit got them through another difficult match, harder in its own way than Mexico. Now they are one game from the biggest match of all.

Solbakken explains Haaland sub after ‘fantastic World Cup’

Solbakken explains Haaland sub after 'fantastic World Cup'

I asked Stale Solbakken about his difficult decision to sub Haaland off. He didn’t think it was a tough call at all.

💬 “It was not a tough decision to take him out, he was finished, maybe I should have taken him out 10 minutes before.

“He had a tremendous World Cup, he used all his energy and power, game after game. He also got a dead leg in the second half, so that combined with the fatigue but he did everything he could — a bit unlucky in a couple of situations.

“But he scored 7 goal in 5 games for us, had a fantastic World Cup.”
