NEED TO KNOW

  • Plumbers in Michigan found a decades-old engagement ring while working on a pipe and sought to locate its owner
  • The ring belonged to Carol Oram, who lost it over 10 years ago after it fell into a toilet at a spa
  • After being cleaned and polished, the ring was returned to Oram, who had paperwork proving it was hers from 1965

After nearly a decade, a lost engagement ring has been reunited with its original owner.

Plumbers working in Michigan found a decades-old engagement ring after it had been lost over a decade ago, according to WWJ. The ring was discovered after the plumbers noticed something shiny in a pipe they were working on.

“He picked it up and we looked at each other and he was like, ‘What do we do with this?'” said Greg Johnson, who owns Titan Plumbing in Howell. “I’m like, ‘Let’s see if we can find the owner!'”

Johnson’s team posted on social media that they’d found an engagement ring. Their post jogged the memory of someone named Sue who worked at the Fountain of Youth Spa.

“She remembered 10 years ago that a customer that was in her store dropped her wedding ring down the toilet, and Sue and this customer tried to fish it out themselves,” explained Johnson. “They got big rubber gloves and were reaching down the toilet trying to get this ring out, and it was gone.”

Sue ended up reaching out to the ring’s owner, Carol Oram, who got in touch with Titan Plumbing.

“She finally came in and saw the ring and said it looks like mine,” said Jason Matznick, general manager of Titan Plumbing. “She had original paperwork from 1965. She had been married with her husband for like 60 years.”

Because the ring was so dirty after sitting in the pipe for over ten years, it looked like yellow gold. But when it was cleaned and polished at a local jeweler, it sparkled again.

“She put it on. They were crying. It was cute!” said Matznick.

Johnson added that he was happy to have played a part in returning the ring.

“I know that if it was my wife, she would look until she couldn’t look anymore, so it was good to get it back to her,” he explained.
