Golden Tempo and Cherie DeVaux did it again.
The Kentucky Derby winner surged late to win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga Springs, giving DeVaux the kind of day she could only dream of. DeVaux had already sent out Englishman to win the Woody Stephens Stakes in track record time earlier on the card.
Then Golden Tempo closed it out in dramatic fashion, making her the first female trainer to win two Triple Crown titles.
Powershift set the pace early, Growth Equity made a move on the outside to challenge and then Golden Tempo came running. Using the same script as DeVaux drew up at Churchill Downs five weeks ago, jockey Jose Ortiz had Golden Tempo surging at the end, holding off Commandment and Derby runner-up Renegade, who had been the 9-5 favorite just ahead of the race.
This year, the 158th edition of the event was once again held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, marking the third consecutive year that the “Test of Champions” has taken place at this historic venue.
This is just a temporary home, however. The shift to Saratoga comes as Belmont Park undergoes extensive renovations. Racing fans can look forward to the Belmont Stakes returning to its traditional Long Island home in 2027 once construction is complete.
Golden Tempo had once again come in as an underdog. DeVaux, who was born and began her career in Saratoga, however, made this Belmont Stakes a special homecoming.
She was immediately asked about skipping the Preakness Stakes and if Golden Tempo would have had a chance at the Triple Crown.
“I don’t want to think about that,” DeVaux said. “We made our decision.”
Golden Tempo rested during the Preakness and took the bookend jewels of the Triple Crown.
