Overview and History

Churchill Downs, located at 700 Central Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, was founded by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., inspired by European horse racing traditions, including England’s Epsom Derby and France’s Grand Prix de Paris. The track officially opened on May 17, 1875, hosting the inaugural Kentucky Derby, won by the chestnut colt Aristides. Named after Clark’s uncles, John and Henry Churchill, the racetrack has become synonymous with Thoroughbred racing and the “most exciting two minutes in sports”.

Facilities and Features

Churchill Downs spans approximately 175 acres and features a one-mile dirt oval track, a 7/8-mile turf course, and stabling for over 1,400 horses. The iconic Twin Spires, added in 1895, are a symbol of the track and the Kentucky Derby. The venue includes luxury suites, simulcast areas, and The Big Board, a massive 4K video screen installed in 2014. Permanent lighting allows for night racing, and the track hosts three racing meets annually: Spring, September, and Fall.

Major Events

Churchill Downs is best known for the Kentucky Derby, held on the first Saturday in May, and the Kentucky Oaks, run the day before the Derby. The track also hosts over 70 live races annually, including graded stakes like the Stephen Foster Stakes, Clark Stakes, and Turf Classic Stakes. Derby Week features themed events such as Thurby and 502’s Day, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Cultural and Economic Impact

The Kentucky Derby draws more than 165,000 guests on race day and millions of viewers worldwide, generating over $400 million for the Louisville economy each year. Traditions include the garland of roses for the Derby winner, the playing of “My Old Kentucky Home,” and the serving of mint juleps. Churchill Downs has also contributed to the preservation of horse racing history through the Kentucky Derby Museum, opened in 1985.
