The U.S. dollar bill features three Latin phrases: E Pluribus Unum, Annuit Coeptis, and Novus Ordo Seclorum, symbolizing unity, divine favor, and a new era.

E Pluribus Unum

This phrase appears on the banner held by the eagle and translates to “Out of many, one”. It represents the union of the original thirteen colonies into a single nation and embodies the concept of unity in diversity, highlighting that people from different backgrounds come together as one country.

Annuit Coeptis

Located above the pyramid on the back of the bill, Annuit Coeptis translates to “He (God) has favored our undertakings”. The phrase reflects the belief of the founding fathers that the success of the United States was guided by divine providence. The Latin word annuit means “he/she/it nods or approves,” and coeptis refers to “undertakings” or “beginnings”.

Novus Ordo Seclorum

Found beneath the pyramid, Novus Ordo Seclorum means “A new order of the ages”. This phrase signifies the establishment of a new era in history, marking the United States as a fresh experiment in democracy and self-governance, distinct from monarchic traditions. It was inspired by the Roman poet Virgil and reflects the vision of a new democratic order.

Together, these three Latin phrases on the dollar bill convey the ideals of unity, divine guidance, and the creation of a new political and social order, encapsulating the founding principles and aspirations of the United States.
