What is an ultramarathon? It’s running a race that is more of a distance than a regular marathon (26.2 miles).
I’ve done about 35-40 ultras including “The Pikes Peak Marathon,” “The Pikes Peak Doubler,” “The Canadian Death Race,” and others and what I’d say is when thinking of doing an ultra for the first time, have plenty of smaller (shorter) races that you have accomplished! All running really includes the “mental aspect” (not taking away from the physical one!) and the longer you run, the more it takes a toll on how you “think!” With many ultras, you are more likely to find yourself alone (because there’s usually a lot less people in them and a lot longer distance) so you’ll have plenty of time for thinking and that can get to you even if you’ve prepared for it! So being “prepared” means many things but one of them is preparing your mind for the lonely moments that you will keep questioning yourself whether you should quit or not! So again, PREPARE, prepare!
