What’s amazing to me now is that I actually recall fixating on the fact that my thighs a-l-m-o-s-t touched at the top….If I could go back in time and slap my eighteen-year-old self, I would. I would tell her to snap out of it, because that’s the best you thighs will ever be. You should take pictures of your thighs right now so you can remember how amazing they were!

In terms of effect on the world, it’s very good that I’ve lived. And so I guess, if I could go back in time and prevent my birth, I wouldn’t do it. But I sure wish I hadn’t had so much pain.

I wouldn’t change a thing in my own life, but I’d like to go back in time anyway though, just to some eras that I wish I’d lived in, like the ’60s. I’d love to have been in London in the ’60s, partying away.

I would like to go back in time and remind myself that when you’re working in music field, it’s very easy to overestimate how much of yourself you have to give. It’s obviously a competitive field, and it’s hard work, and it matters if it’s something that you care about, so you have to really pour yourself into it. But I wish I had been more aware of my limits when I was younger. I wish I had understood better that everyone is going to be looking out for their own interests, but the only person who is looking out for your best interests is you.

I get out of all of these things that many of these candidates would rather take legislation to build a time machine and go back in time to where, uh, we had, you know, no women voting, slavery was cool. I mean, it’s just kind of ridiculous.

Now that I’m almost forty, I look back at some of the decisions I made when I was younger – decisions that I thought of as courageous, or generous, or otherwise befitting a writer; befitting someone who had taken it as their life’s goal to understand the human condition – and I wish I could go back in time and be like, “Hey, you don’t actually have to do that – you’re allowed to look out for yourself a little bit.”

It was a standard fantasy when you fell in love to imagine you could go back in time and find your beloved growing up, appear there, save him or her, get together as adolescents, by magic, and go on together, fighting for one another, into old age, never wavering.
